IAudio i7 16GB January 8, 2009 This is a remarkably clean sounding player. If you have good quality headphones this player will bring out the best in them. Battery life is one of the longest available. The fact that it allows you to play lossless recording (flac) is a great feature. Excellent value!
AMAZING sound quality poor interface December 31, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just placed an order for my second Cowon I7; my original beloved one lost a fight with a car door earlier this week. About 14 mo ago when my Zen 5 started acting up I went searching for a better quality music player. After checking out various sites, and IRC forums, I went with the Cowon I7 with upgraded ear buds. My needs are for music (not video): - Loud and Clear: In both high end headphones or so-so gym speakers for aerobics - Easy to create and edit, ordered, play lists - Long battery life. Everyone has different standards but for my above-listed needs: Cowon's sound with Shure SE530 head phones is amazing. The I7 has 8 or 16G of memory - either being enough for my needs. The file types supported include MP3, OGG, FLAC, WAV, XviD, and others I don't use. The JetEffect and EQ settings offered so many possibilities I was a bit overwhelmed. Soon I learned more can be better and that there are many audio enthusiasts out there in forums who will teach you if you are willing to ask. The battery life of the player is amazing. I always got 30+ hours out of one charge for music. The only reason that I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the clunky design and buggy firmware. The sound reeled me in right away or I would have returned the thing that first week after trying to figure the button logic (give it up - there is none). Also, it does not allow for easily editable playlists. To get what I want, in order, it was easiest to drag and drop to a subfolder while the I7 was connected to my PC (I need an ordered playlist for aerobics). The I7 doesn't really do playlists at all, rather you create sub-folders and add songs in the order you want them, which may be a pain with DRMS music, which I don't do. In the past I have owned or tried: a Rio, Zune, iRiver, and Zen. The i7 by Cowon is by far the best sound quality and volume level that I have come across. As an added bonus you can control playback speed -- for those of you who use BPM for workouts. My quest taught me that not everyone has the same needs in a player. If you care more about an easy interface and cool accessories then this isn't the player for you. If loud, clear music in a small package with a long battery life is what you want then you will love the I7. I have never used it for video, but its small screen size makes me think it isn't the best player for that medium.
Not an iPod yet... December 12, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this because it is one of the few audio players made in Korea (as opposed to China). I suppose I would have preferred one made in the US, or in Taiwan... but that's neither here nor there.
Everything you've heard about the counter-intuitive interface is true. It is impossible to operate blind, and an outright danger to use while driving. I'm waiting and hacking for some Rockbox support, so that I can get rid of that horrid interface.
The lack of playlist support is the capital frustration. Mine does not play FLAC, and frequently struggles with high-bitrate (over 256kb/s) ogg files. For instance it frequently plays industrial/goth/metal like Cruxshadows's Dreamcypher at 1/2 speed. Dream Theater and Kamelot sometimes get an awful digital squelching at crescendos and high-distortion riffs. I've had some of my older MP3s also land with a thud on this device by either not playing, or not playing well. The last gripe is that the device will not play while charging/attached to a computer, although this is a minor gripe.
The iAudio does have a big capacity, has fantastic sound output which easily blows any iPod (or other MP3 player I've heard) out of the water.
Bottom-line: If you are willing to go through some trouble, this player can be quite rewarding, but it is not recommended to anyone who isn't a tech-head or a audiophile.
Smart, Small, Audiorific November 25, 2008 Very small and fun to use once you know how to operate the different buttons. Great sound, file system is a little funky. don't buy for video but for music and audio books it is great.
Player is Great. FLAC! Tech Support WORST EVER! November 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've really enjoyed this player, great sounding (using shure in ear buds), very portable, mac compatible, etc.
However, as of lately, the player has been acting erratically, the buttons suddenly becomes unresponsive, the player starts to go nutz and browse by itself or scroll rapidly by itself. I've tried resetting the unit with no avai, finally contacted tech support, and this is the worst support I've received: TECH NAME = ELIAS 10/31/08 "Hi ******
Have you tried anything like resetting the player to see if any difference? Thank You, Technical Suppport Staff Cowon America Inc "Digital Pride"" 11/04/08
"Hi Alen
If you reset the player it only needs to be brief. Have you tried anything else? Thank You, Technical Suppport Staff Cowon America Inc "Digital Pride" "
the tech staff asked me if I have tried "anything else?" w t f. lost confidence that they will try to help me.
