1 out of 5 stars The most annoying MP3 player I have ever had   October 17, 2008
This was the first product by iRiver that I have ever tried, and to say that I was disappointed is an understatement. This player has numerous usability drawbacks, which are very annoying. I did not expect this kind of inferior design from iRiver. It does have the trademark superior audio quality though.

The good:
* Sound quality is great, and there are plenty equalizer options (perhaps even too many for me).
* Rugged build.

The bad:
* The main control is a joystick which can be tilted in 4 directions or pressed down to access the menu or make a selection. It took me a week to master it reasonably, but I can still say that pressing the joystick down requires a lot of precision. Half of the time when you try to press it, it results in a tilt instead. Luckily, while in the playlist you can tilt the joystick to the right for the same result, but this option does not work in the secondary menus.
* You have to be pretty precise with the joystick in the tilting motion as well. When playing, it is both volume (up/down) and song skip (left/right) control. Sometimes when I tried to adjust the volume, it skipped a song instead! Forget about casual tapping. Extremely annoying!
* The most annoying thing about this device, as mentioned by the others, is the fact that it keeps using the battery even when connected via USB. Writing data to the flash apparently takes much more electricity, so it eats up a whole alkaline to write those 4Gb! Want to refresh your music collection? You better have those 1-2 additional batteries. And if the battery is not quite full, it can sometimes shut down in mid-write unexpectedly, leaving me with a bunch of empty files. What the hell were those designers thinking?!
* The last complaint is about the UI itself. It has lots of gradients (got to use those LCD colors!) and they made the current selection is just a tiny bit brighter than the rest of it. Quite impossible to make out unless you have the contrast adjusted to maximum. If there ever was a good example of how color screens can be MUCH worse than black and white, they have made it with this player.

Conclusion:
Unless you have lots of AAA batteries and think that controlling an MP3 player is a full-time job, stay away from this player. Otherwise, you will probably enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Best travel mp3   September 23, 2008
I backpack the world, so recharging an Ipod in the middle of Africa doesn't fly. Using only a single AAA battery cuts down on space and the annoyance of having to recharge in the middle of my favorite song. The other features are as most everybody else states here, like the joystick can make you want to rip your hair out when it jumps when you don't want it to. My favorite thing is being able to record local radio stations and get real local music anywhere in the world I am and take it home with me. When it came to looking at other mp3's for this feature, I was truly frustrated. This thing kicks butt for all the other reasons, making it easy to put up with the joystick. If you travel and love the local flavor in your ears and want those memories later, this is the one for you.

5 out of 5 stars T60 AAA good to have!   July 22, 2008

Love it. Downside is like what everyone else has said, the joystick is cumbersome at best. But the funtionality is great, and it's good to have 4gigs that are battery operated. Though i wish it were AA. Since flashlights, gps, etc..are all AA at this point. And i opted out for the portable rechargable device for rechargable mp3's. If you don't understand what i mean by that, then a rechargable type prob makes more sense for you...and most people. :)

5 out of 5 stars The best MP3 left that still uses batteries   June 19, 2008
It is very adequate recording for those of us who need to document live sound. The battery, one little AAA, can be changed in any remote location without electricity, unlike most devices nowadays that only have built-in chargers--not good if there's no plug or no time to wait to charge. It downloads so many specific tunes I need to practice or learn; reloads quickly, plus the radio comes in handy. It is my second one, I outgrew the 512 mg, and now just use that for CDs; this one I use for all my C-tunes, or maybe next week I'll load up just G fiddle tunes, whatever, it is a terrific little piece of technology.

5 out of 5 stars Superb and you don't have to toss it in 2 years   April 26, 2008

I purchased this MP3 player based on internet reviews and also on the fact that it is AAA cell powered, not LI powered. I had purchased an 8 gig Zen but returned it because I could not justify paying $150 for an MP3 player that I would either have to replace or pay to have repaired in a few years when the LI battery finally crapped out.
The Zen was a wonderful sounding MP3 player, and so is the T60. Between SRS, the User EQ, and preset EQ's, you can make any kind of music sound full and detailed, not tinny or muffled. I'm using Skullcandy Titan ear buds, and the sound quality is truly amazing. Also, it has a built in FM tuner, which is good, and after a quick firmware upgrade, it is usable in WMP 11.
That being said, this is of course solely an MP3 player. Don't even think about pics or other media. The controls are bit difficult for big hands or for using without looking, and do feel a bit shoddy, but they've withstood what I've thrown at them so far, and I work a delivery route for a living so they get put through some bumps and bruises.
Over all, I am thrilled with this little gadget. I have a bunch of rechargeable batteries I keep charged, so I am never without a power course, and I won't have to pitch this thing eventually because it doesn't have an LI battery. I have enjoyed it so much, I bought a second !
