Variable Hi-frequency hissing - Don't waste your time or money July 28, 2010 Kelsey McClanahan (Northeastern, NV United States of America) These headphones, Sony MDR-RF970R, are horrible. I followed the directions exactly as indicated. I plugged it in and let it charge until the indicator went off (about 17 hours). I made sure no cables were crossed and the transmitter was in a good isolated location. It's all for not as the sound received by the headphones is inconsistently noisy depending on how subtle the sound is and how you hold your head. And yes, I tried all three channels, the auto tuning button, moving the transmitter around -- everything suggested in the manual. These headphones just don't work well.
The sound quality varies inconsistently, and I blame the active filtering built into the headphones. When no music or sound is playing, they are dead silent. Low frequency passes (rumbling, roars, bass drum, thumps, etc...) also contain no hiss. As soon as a high-frequency sound starts to play, the headphones are filled with a high-frequency hissing noise on top of the actual sound. Move around the room and the hiss will increase and decrease. Stand three feet from the transmitter, and the hiss will mostly be gone, until you turn your head and the hiss fades in and out depending on the angle of your head. These headphones are unusable.
It's a shame -- for they're light and very comfortable to wear. The charging mechanism works great too. AND they ingeniously turn themselves on and off simply by wearing them or taking them off your head. But none of it matters for headphones are all about sound, and the sound quality coming out of these headphones is full of hissing and static. The more subtle the passages in the music, the louder the hiss is amplified.
It's says Sony on the package, which is surprising. This is the first Sony product I've purchased (20+ years) that I've ever been unsatisfied with.
A must have July 26, 2010 D. Gray (Santa Fe, New Mexico) These headphones are great, I can have peace and quiet in the house and my Mom when she visits can watch her Golf. My husband can stay up wathcing a movie and all is quiet. How did we ever live without these fantastic earphones. Also, you can still hear your program while walking around with the earphones on. This is our second pair. Love them, worth paying a bit extra for these.
Battery failed to charge July 25, 2010 Hanuman Agrawal We connected the unit as directed but the battery failed to charge after 36 hours and the red light indicating it is not fully charged remained lighted. The charging process should have been completed in 16 hours. We had no problem getting a refund from Amazon for the defective unit. The headphones are also very bulky. We cannot recommend this product.
They Suck Don't Waste Your Money July 21, 2010 ATXVAL I owned these headphones for a year. At first I hardly used them and once I did use them with frequency the headphones became mono, meaning the left side did not work. I had to purchase a new set of wireless headphones but I went with a more expensive pair in hopes of better performance and reliability. I have to use these for work so reliability is a must. The sound was ok if you can put up with constant static. Another negative is that if anybody in your immediate area has the same type of headphones whatever your listening to is interrupted by the other persons audio. If I could give it a negative star I would. Here I'll do this instead -*
P.S. Sony's warranty sucks too so if they break you have to pay for the labor after 90 days and after a year you have to pay for parts. Just so happens mine broke just after a year coincidence...you decide.
maybe not the best, however... July 10, 2010 Lucid Speed (Nevada) Maybe not the best quality compared to expensive wired headphones, however I find them very comfortable, and
I have discovered that the quality depends on placement of the unit. as it turns out we use it mostly for my kid who likes to sleep with music while the other doesn't and, the wired ones tend to wrap around their neck, so I have given them to the kid.
only problem is that at the base the plug in for mp3 players and such is not working the best now and has to be fiddled with in order to work. otherwise, I love them. and the price is under $75.00
