Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Emergency Radio has the option of five different power sources (including a hand crank and solar panel) and turns on automatically to provide emergency alerts. An essential part of any home, camping or car emergency kit, the radio can be powered by the built-in hand crank, solar panel, mini USB port, AC adapter (not included) or 3 AA batteries (not included). Best of all, you don t need to worry about missing important information, since the radio turns itself on automatically when there is an important emergency alert in your area. With NOAA radio stations and S.A.M.E. technology, you only get the alerts and information you need. This AM/FM radio is equipped with Specific Area Message Encoding, commonly known as S.A.M.E. It means you can program the radio to alert you to emergency and weather conditions only in the specific county or counties that affect you. Plus, the radio receives all 7 NOAA weather stations (including Alert ). Also functions as a flashlight, S.O.S. beacon, siren, cell phone charger, alarm clock and more. 7 3/4" w x 2 1/2" d x 8 1/2" h. Be prepared for storms and power outages, at home or on the road, with our self-powered Emergency Radio. Don t wait order from Brookstone now!

1 out of 5 stars Power adapter not included!   August 29, 2010

And dont count on buying a power adapter from eton. They are out of stock and don't expect to have one for at least 30 more days. Did you ever buy consumer electronics and found out the power adapter is not included?

1 out of 5 stars All style, no substance   August 10, 2010
...Bill (St. Paul, MN United States)
I'm sitting at a baseball game as I write this review with a DEAD FR-600. I'm thankful that I never needed this thing in anything approaching an emergency since I'm certain it would fail unless the weather was ideal.

After 3 months of use it's become about useless since it burns out the 3 AA batteries (alkaline or the rechargeable) while sitting in my car's trunk for just a week. Trying the crank charging is nearly as useless since the charges barely last 5 minutes at a time. It's hopelessly underpowered and proved that a fresh set of batteries would rarely last longer than 6-10 hours. Why they didn't choose C (or larger) cells is more than a valid question especially if one was without power for more than half a day.

The radio is essentially all style and no substance.

The knobs and controls are loose and feel like they may fall off.
The finish is soft, scratches and collects dirt easily.
The crank, though sturdier than other Eton models (this is my second --and last), is unlikely to last under heavy use.
There are unexplainable 2-second delays after doing any operation (turning it on, switching modes, shutting it off).
The flashlight is a joke. Assuming you have power, the light is limited and unfocused.
The SOS red LED light is similarly useless.
The alarm is almost loud enough to be more than simply annoying.
The idea anyone would use its limited battery power to charge a cell phone is UNcredible.

That a radio of this sort, and price, is not water resistant is another reason to believe the manufacturer has a good idea on what SHOULD be in an emergency radio but NO IDEA HOW IT WOULD BE USED IN AN ACTUAL EMERGENCY.

3 out of 5 stars SAME codes buggy   July 27, 2010
BW in Nashville
Nice radio, good reception and sound and I love the size and layout. But as other reviewers have noted, the SAME codes are buggy. The ETON will go off for weather warnings in counties other than what I have programmed; and as another reviewer mentioned, my other weather radio does not. At least the Amber alert block works (not that I am against Amber alerts, I'm just not going to run out of my house at 3am looking for an abductee). I've not bothered to contact ETON support based on the feedback from others and I'm not sure what they could do anyway.

The other odd thing is how it handles power. A red LED is on when it is plugged into power, and stays on even when the battery is charged. There are also some controls that are a bit confusing.

Fix the SAME code problem and this would be a great radio.

3 out of 5 stars Power Adapter where are you???   July 22, 2010

This is the SECOND product I have ordered this month that doesn't ship with an A/C adapter! Maybe I am getting old but when I looked back through the reviews I did not notice this glaring omission.

Products have for so long come with said adapters without it being 'extra' I just do not have that expectation or I would have ordered the thing WITH the product!

Speaking of adapters is also says the the Cell phone adapter is "not included" and again while this one I can understand they include no link or reference as to where you can get this.

That and the fervent reminders that this "weather radio" cannot well...be exposed to -the weather is pretty much a let down. Case in point they three times state to "keep away from humidity". Well as I live in the most humid state in the contiguious United States does that mean FLORIDA is off limits for this 'weather radio"...

Maybe I will give this one to my kids as it purely is not the "all-weather" multipower friendly device I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Many features, good functionality   July 17, 2010
ADK Explorer
Finally a multi-powered radio with an Aux input!! This was one of my top criteria when searching for a new multi-powered radio. I've seen and owned a few different models and brands of multi-powered radios, and Eton makes the best by far. Honestly, I'm not sure why this one gets bad reviews. The reception is incredible- it even outdoes my car. Even the shortwave seems to perform very well, and the scan feature makes SW much more enjoyable. Regarding battery life- I conditioned the battery by plugging into the USB on my computer and gave it a full charge as soon as I got it. Put it near a window and it will always be charged when you need it. I will probably bring some AA batteries with me for my upcoming canoe trip just in case it rains the whole time and I get lazy and don't want to crank the dynamo. The sound on this radio is not superb, but very listenable. I cannot attest to durability until I take it for it's first expedition. It is sure to see plenty of abuse. I will update my review later. I can say that it feels like it will hold up well.
