Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The Sangean Model DT-400W is the last pocket radio you will ever need to buy. It has about everything you could want, and then some, in a small, pocket sized portable radio. As an example the new NOAA Weather Alert Emergency Channel sounds a very loud audible tone when an extreme weather condition is imminent and/or a police emergency or a child abduction has occurred or any type of public awareness becomes critical. Even with your radio off or you are listening to another station the weather alert monitor continues to monitor the NOAA channels should an emergency arise. To conserve battery life the DT-400W provides an option to select the time you would like the NOAA alert to be active and a small LED alert flashes to remind you that the alert is on. In addition to emergencies the 7 NOAA channels provide up to date general weather information useful if you're planning a trip or just a picnic for the weekend. The large backlit LCD display clearly displays the time, station, battery life indication, alert indication and all other pertinent information. Advanced PLL Synthesized Digital Receiver provides drift free AM/FM reception. Deep Bass Boost adds to your stereo musical listening pleasure and 19 random preset selections lets you mix AM/FM stations with immediate access through the "My Favorites" button. Other features include Lock Switch to prevent accidental set-up changes, optional 90 minute auto shutoff, built-in speaker, auto station seek and a removable belt clip.

5 out of 5 stars Great Small Radio   August 27, 2010

Exceeded my expectations in all areas. Earphone sound quality and station receiption very good. Battery life excellent. Would recommend to others.

4 out of 5 stars Sangean dt-400 radio review   August 9, 2010
A. William Ceglia
This is my second sangean and unless I become aware of something better, I will buy another when needed. Fits with my life style. I have it on my hip constantly and listen most of the day. Sound quality and reception are good in my area - Reno. My first Sangean lasted over a year and eventually just wore out from constant use and abuse. Battery life diminished along with volume and controls. Careful with the belt clip, it breaks easily and costs $15.00 to replace or you just do without the convenience, or get a carry case.

5 out of 5 stars DT-400W versus Sony SRF-M37W   August 8, 2010

The DT-400W deserves every star possible. I had mine for about 4 years and after dropping it on the pavement for about the 5th time, it finally went silent. I decided to check the web on what others thought of as the best portable radio, as I wanted to see if there was a replacement a little less expensive than Sangean, and the consensus seemed to be the Sony m37w. Bought one at Best Buy (a.k.a. Worst Buy). The verdict: the Sony's am may be as good as the DT-400w, but as for fm, forget about it. Different leagues on fm, little league versus Major League. The Sony couldn't capture the weaker stations, and the Sony had terrible rejection ability as to other stations. I'm returning the Sony this week and going to replace it either with another 400W or with the 200X.

5 out of 5 stars Small Rugged Radio is a Gem   August 6, 2010

I use a radio to listen to ballgames, talk shows, news (not much music) whilst mowing the lawn or working outside. When I mow the lawn, I need in ear earphones because of the noise, when I'm just gardening or something I want to be able to use a speaker. Since I use it when working outside, the radio does sometimes come in contact with dirt and oil.

I owned a DT300VW, a Sangean non-rugged version of this radio. I loved it. It worked for years even after the housing was shattered off. One day after eight years of service it died, so I went on Amazon and was pleased to discover the "rugged" version of this radio, with some extra features.

Even though digital tuning radios cost more, they're worth it. Your 15 dollar radio with the slide analog tuning moves around and you lose the station. A digital tuner locks it in. The controls on this radio are well made and even though they've come in contact with dirt and oil they are still smooth functioning. I like the arrow up/down control for favorite stations, which can be mixed and matched between channels on all the bands, AM, FM, and 7 NOAA channels. The sound is good. but again I don't use this for music. Of course the sound quality is much better with earphones than with the small speaker. There's a switch that selects speaker, earphones, and mono mode (mono mode because sometimes the mono setting helps to pull in a weak station). You need to plug in a plug antenna (supplied) or earphones into the earphone jack for FM stations. There's a key switch which prevents accidentally hitting a button (most often the on off switch). The display shows the station while on, and when off reports the time. The display also shows battery life and other functions. There's a feature which sounds an alarm when there's a weather alert - I've never used this. Some reviews have criticized the clip holder as flimsy; maybe they improved it because it seems fine to me. It clips tightly onto your pants or belt so that you can move around while you listen.

I'm impressed with the battery life. I use my DT-400W for an average of about two hours a day, and it's been three months and I still haven't changed the battery! And the thing is, I use rechargeable batteries. I thought that rechargeables were not good for standby operations, but maybe the battery technology or devices have improved. Teaming this radio up with rechargeable AA batteries allows you to have a great mobile radio at almost no operating cost. I've even taken the radio out with me and I still haven't changed the batteries. The battery meter still only shows two of three bars.

Pay the extra money and get a good rugged radio like this, especially if you use it every day or outside.

Great item. Does what it's suppose to do. Great reception. Couldn't ask for a better radio.\
