major disappointment August 29, 2010 mhoover 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It works, just barely, if your source and target are two feet apart.
The sound sucks even then. A lot of money wasted. I am very ticked off.
Wish I had never ordered it. Don't make same mistake.
Piece of crap, only buy if you enjoy throwing away money August 28, 2010 J. Buck (Southern IL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The other reviews are correct, this thing is worthless out of the box. I set it up on my jukebox to transmit roughly 6 feet with a clear line of sight to a receiver that plays on my outside speakers. If this thing cannot transmit 6 unobstructed feet, what good is it? So I opened it up and turned the little dial inside. At least I was now getting a signal, albeit weak and static-y. I would pretty much lose the signal when anyone opend the outside door, about 4 foot out of the line of sight. Oh, yeah, the volume button was wobbley and never worked unless I shimmed it with a little piece of folded paper. This thing was a complete waste of money.
static August 25, 2010 Airspace (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I did a lot of research before buying an FM Transmitter, and picked this one, so my wife could hook it to her ipod in the kitchen and be able to have her music play in the kitchen radio, and the living room and backporch, all within 35 feet. I have some vintage radios, that work well and look really cool and wanted to use these in the living room.
I got it, did the modification 1/4 turn of the screw inside (could peel the sticker to get to it so undid the 3 screws in the black case). It was easy. Finding an empty station was much harder than it should have been. In OKC, I found 107.3 to be the best after 2 hours of fiddling with it. Also the input volume switch adds static to the line if turned up to high--as stated it the mannual.
Anyway, it gets 2 stars as I only got 10 feet of range realiably line of sight no matter if it was an old radio or my awesome Marantz reciever, and only 4 feet through a wall. I could get signal farther but it would have intermittent static at best. All of my recieving turners have big antennas, i will try to put a better antenna on the crane, but i am not hopeful this will meet my needs.
I have no idea how people get 100 to 200 feet. They must live in the country with no trees and not mind static.
Excellent Transmitter August 15, 2010 Mike B (Near Boston) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
After getting ripped off by TAW Global, when they took my money but never sent the Whole House FM Transmitter (Had to file an A-Z Amazon Guarantee Claim to get my money back) I decided to buy this C Crane transmitter.
This one is about half of the price, too.
After applying the 'mod' (Thank You 'NC') it works perfectly.
I use it to transmit XM radio at work. It has better range than the FM transmitters built-in to the older XM radios.
One note- You may need to adjust BOTH the level of the audio device and the level of the transmitter to get the best quality.
The tech guys could probably explain why this is, but after a little 'tweaking' it's perfect.
I'm very happy with this purchase and wholeheartedly recommend it.
Music All Over the House! Very Happy! August 2, 2010 Michael Rothermel (Dallas, TX USA) As I write this I'm listening to streaming music from my iphone... on three different radios in three different rooms! I just tried the car radio which is in a driveway on the opposite side of the house from the transmitter; I could find the signal but it was mostly static. But that's through a couple walls AND a stone exterior on the house. I can't complain about that.
Just to be fair, I used the very easy instructions posted previously to adjust the variable resistor. It sure helped. I didn't really test it fairly; since I knew about the VR2 before I bought the transmitter, I did it almost immediately. I tried it with and without a metal grounding plane (a steel outdoor road sign and also an aluminum baking pan) but didn't notice ANY improvement so the grounding plane is not necessary.
The real reason I bought this is for late-night TV viewing without disturbing people who are trying to sleep. For this purpose I bought a cheap rechargeable FM radio like you might take jogging to use with headphones. I didn't want headphone cables strung across the room (and I'm not a big fan of FM headphones because they're too heavy).
As other reviews have said, it is very important to find an empty frequency so you're not fighting against a local station (and possibly jamming a neighbor who's listening to it).
I've only had the Crane for 30 minutes and I can absolutely recommend this to you.
