 A worthwhile upgrade from the E4c January 9, 2009
After years of constant use, my E4c's bit the dust. I was so blown away with them that I'd always planned on upgrading to the top of the line Shures once the day finally came. I had to see how much better it could get, and get better is does. Going from the E4c to the SE530 isn't near as big a difference as going from standard headphones to the E4c, but the SE530 comes closer to perfection - close enough to warrant the price premium.
The E4c has a neutral and flat response and they sound great because of this, but they lacked truly deep, bone rattling bass (they don't go below about 20hz or so) and the highest of high frequencies seemed to roll off. These deficiencies are only at the very limit of the dynamic range, so this is forgivable.
When I first heard the SE530, I didn't notice any difference from the E4c, which actually was a relief, because the E4c is so great. After spending a little critical listening time with various music though, the difference became quite apparent. The SE530 transcends the dynamic range limitations of the E4c, presumably because it utilizes separate woofers and tweeters. The bass goes as low as I can hear, which is about 15hz (and at the limit of human hearing). And the response doesn't roll off at the high end of the spectrum. This makes for a more lively and realistic, yet still accurate sound. In short, the SE530 maintains the flat response of the E4c while increasing the dynamic range. Happily, this is exactly what I wanted in my perfect headphone.
Amzing Sound And Worth The Price. January 3, 2009
After a sad accident with my E4C's and a gift certificate for Christmas, I took the skeptical plunge into the world of the SE530's and I'm happy to report that not only have my fears been quelled, my expectations have been blown away. The sound is amazing. When I listened to them out of the box, I expected the sound to be garbled and I wasn't disappointed. After the recommended 12 hour "burn in" period, I was blown away. At best I'm an amateur audiophile and have not been blessed with a gift for flowery technical terms so I won't bother with details but I know this much: The sound is significantly better the E4C's and worth the premium.

i purchased these set of shure's and are my first pair of "really" high end earphones....and frankly speaking not very impressed by the performance..(yeah i know i am contradicting all those 5 star ratings...upon which i purchased this in the first place)....
i mainly listen to trance/house/dance music...and this does not give you the performance that it should command for such a price....my previous set of earphones were bose tripods and it had a lot of bass...boomy i would say...and not liking to everyones taste....i love bass and the more the better....so if you are the type who has my tastes.....i would suggest avoid these headphones
but i would like to add.....these are AWESOME for all other types of genre's....esp anything that uses a guitar....pure audio nirvana.....
i am now goin to purchase an amplifier for my ipod to booster the bass performance....and then will see the difference...and hopefully get better results....else would sell them off on ebay.....
again.....if you listen to music through your ipod....and listen to trance/house/dance types of music....and like "LOADS" of bass...avoid....cause these headphones have a balance of all the 3...low,mid and high....but might be a tad lacking in the bass department....
this is my opinion cause i am comparing the bass response of the shure's to the bose tripod.....(yeah i know a crappy comparison,but still is a comparison for all those bass junkies)
i thought i should put it out there......cause i love bass....and this isnt as satisfying as i expected it to be...after all you are paying almost half a grand for it...right?
note:after i purchased these earphones,when i realized there little bass in them,i had asked for replacement....but the new ones are the same.....guess thats how shures are...
Better than Ultimate Ears. December 31, 2008
I have a Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro Earphones (Black). SE530 is more comfortable and the sound far better. I choose this than the Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10 Pro Earphones Gun Metal Blue even though the triple.fi 10 has a detachable cable. I just want a better sound than having a detachable cable.

This review is meant to be helpful to those people who are pretty much 'sold' on the SE530s. They are GREAT, but almost everyone winds up using the 530s with the silicone triple-flex sleeves (included). Be warned that the factory mounted foam sleeves can be VERY difficult to remove. The foam sleeves are formed around a hard rubber insert that becomes stuck on an unseen barb (mentioned in instructions). The harder you grasp the foam sleeves, the more they resist. I'd bet that some people have broken the earbud itself trying to remove the sleeve. I had luck by grasping the foam at the very end- then twisting and pulling. I'm sure there are other ways to remove stubborn sleeves, just be patient.
Aside from that, these earbuds are a pure joy to listen to!!
